The last time Bob Jones University made national headlines, when the Supreme Court denied the school’s appeal to regain its tax-exempt status in the early ‘s, I was a student there and a member of the debate team. Although I loved debating, I never had much enthusiasm when challenged to defend the university’s policy banning interracial dating.
Even if one could argue that Bible verses taught that groups of people should remain separate, it was hard to explain why blacks couldn’t date whites, but Italians could date Germans and Koreans could date Chinese. The decision to drop the ban, announced last night by the college’s president, Bob Jones III, is obviously long overdue. But the school will remain a singular place. When I was there, the ban on interracial dating had far less effect on student life than the myriad of other rules at the school.
For example, students signed a pledge agreeing to rules about the music we could listen to and the length of men’s hair and women’s dresses. In fact, all dating, even among those of the same race, was heavily restricted. You couldn’t call a woman to ask her out by phone. Instead, you had to send her a note through a dormitory mail system. If she said yes, you could negotiate the time or place of your meeting, but the options were few. You could meet after dinner in the university snack shop or at the university social parlor, where aging chaperones carefully monitored the rule requiring six inches between men and women.
Unchaperoned off-campus dates were prohibited.
